Scottish Country Dancing and Music

Royal Scottish Dance societies are found wherever Scots have settled. British Columbia has a number of flourishing dance societies who meet weekly for dancing and instruction to taped music with a standardized structure, form and tempo. When live music is needed for a ball, the VFO is called upon to provide powerful and danceable music. Our Dance Library, Music Library

This music has a long and fascinating history. After the 1745 rebellion, bagpipes were outlawed and ballroom dancing was performed to fiddle music. In ensuing years, great fiddlers such as Neil Gow, the Dows and James Scott Skinner played reels and strathspeys for dancing and made Scottish dance music known to thousands.

VFO musicians regularly comment on the emotional lift they experience when playing for Scottish Country Dance parties. The sight of up to 200 dancers on the floor performing intricate maneuvers with such obvious enjoyment stimulates the musicians to new heights of interpretation and expression. This, in turn, feeds back to the dancers and often results in a memorable evening in which both dancers and musicians outperform their own expectations - a truly wonderful experience for all!!
